Plot summary
Evan Trautwig is a devoted volunteer in Glenview, Ohio, and runs the town's Costco. The store's night guard is killed, and the local police find no leads and lose interest in the case. Evan decides to organize a neighborhood watch to track down whoever is responsible. The only neighbors willing to join are Bob, a construction manager who keeps a close eye on his teenage daughter; Franklin, a high school dropout who wants to be a police officer but failed the tests; and Jamarcus, newly divorced. Evan's recruits mostly treat the patrols as a chance to drink and relax, which frustrates him. One night out in the car, they strike something and find a metallic orb that appears to be an alien weapon.

- 20th Century Fox pulled The Watch's teaser poster and trailer from Florida theaters in March 2012 amid the controversy over the February shooting death of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch captain; the trailer showed Jonah Hill pretending to shoot at teenagers with his hand.
- Special effects company Legacy Effects built the alien suit, which had an animatronic head controlled remotely by three people; the suit was so hot that it had to be unzipped between takes to let Doug Jones cool off.
- Jonah Hill's commitment to The Watch forced him to turn down a role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, which he had considered "the perfect next step" after his 2011 Oscar nomination; he later got a part in it anyway.
- The Watch was the final film role of actor R. Lee Ermey, who died on April 15, 2018.
- Will Ferrell was in talks to star in the film during its early development, with David Dobkin negotiating to direct, but both had left the project by August 2009.
- Filming took place at Marietta Square in Marietta, Georgia, where businesses were renamed and an alley behind Hemingway's Bar & Grill was treated so the buildings would look artificially aged.
- In late November 2011, the site of a former BJ's Wholesale Club in what is now Peachtree Corners, Georgia, was converted to look like a Costco for shooting.
