Plot summary
Ted Stroehmann admires Mary Jensen from a distance at their high school in Cumberland, Rhode Island. When he stands up to bullies who are bothering her brother Warren, Mary asks him to the prom. On the night of the dance he gets his scrotum caught in his zipper and is taken to the hospital, so he misses it. Mary moves away and they lose contact. Thirteen years later, Ted, a magazine writer, still thinks about her, so his friend Dom Woganowski points him to a private investigator.

- According to Bobby, the scene where Ted gets his scrotum stuck in his pants fly came from a real incident: their sister was listening to records with eighth grade students in the basement, one of the kids zipped himself up in the bathroom, and their father, a doctor, had to check on him.
- Because the Farrelly brothers were fans of the New England Patriots they originally wanted quarterback Drew Bledsoe as Mary's football-playing boyfriend, but a mosh incident in a club ruled him out; Steve Young then turned the role down due to the film's coarse nature, and it went to Brett Favre.
- Besides Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Jon Stewart were considered for the role of Ted Stroehmann, while Bill Murray was considered for Pat Healy but the Farrelly brothers thought he was too old for it, and Vince Vaughn and Cuba Gooding Jr. were also considered for that part.
- Chris Farley was considered for the role of Mary's brother Warren, but his health was in rapid decline due to his drug addictions and he was forced to turn down the role; he died in December 1997, in the middle of the film's production.
