Janeane Garofalo
Biography
Janeane Garofalo is an American comedian and actress. Born in Newton, New Jersey, she began as a stand-up comic in the mid-1980s and became a cast member on The Ben Stiller Show, The Larry Sanders Show, and Saturday Night Live. She had her breakthrough in Reality Bites (1994), then took leading or major parts in The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996), The Matchmaker, Mystery Men (1999), Wet Hot American Summer (2001), and the voice of Colette Tatou in Ratatouille (2007). On television she appeared on The West Wing, 24, Ideal, and Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. She earned nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards and one Screen Actors Guild Award. She co-wrote the book Feel This Book with Ben Stiller in 1999 and wrote and directed the 2001 comedy short Housekeeping.

A role that slipped away
Garofalo passed on playing television reporter Gale Weathers in Wes Craven's Scream, since she felt the movie was too violent. She explained that she did not want a part in a film where a teen girl was disemboweled.
First role
Garofalo made her movie debut in Late for Dinner in 1991, playing a counter worker at a burger joint in a short comical scene. She filmed it the year before her first national television appearance.
A first
Garofalo followed The Truth About Cats and Dogs by taking the lead in The Matchmaker, a 1997 romantic comedy about a cynical American woman's misadventures on a reluctant trip to Ireland. It is her first and only lead role to date.

Garofalo was a history student at Providence College when she won a Showtime cable network comedy talent search, taking the title of Funniest Person in Rhode Island.

In the early 1990s, Garofalo helped lead the alternative comedy scene in Los Angeles. She launched the alt-show at Big & Tall Books in LA on August 6, 1991.

In 2007, Garofalo voiced Colette Tatou, a chef in the Pixar/Disney film Ratatouille. For the part, she affected a pronounced French accent, fitting a character based on a French cook.
