Plot summary
At the University of Cincinnati, Matt Larkin has good grades, a well-to-do family and a fiancée named Alice, and spends his spare time hosting bingo for the elderly. His friend Tipton brings around Sproles, a classmate with a brother working undercover, and the pair describe nights out in the country at a house belonging to Jean. Matt scoffs, then weighs his coming marriage and decides to go along. He and Tipton drive out expecting a party, but the party is over and the house is quiet. Fetching a beer in the kitchen, Matt meets Jewel, who lives nearby and uses Jean's house as a refuge from an abusive stepfather. He returns to the countryside to see her again, and the two begin a relationship.
