Plot summary
Two alien infants are sent to Earth in pods before a black hole destroys their planets. One lands in a rich mansion and grows up to be the superhero Metro Man; the other lands in a prison and grows up to be Megamind, a blue-skinned supervillain with a large head. At school the two are classmates, and the popular Metro Man becomes Megamind's rival. As adults, Megamind and his fish-like friend Minion keep attacking Metro City and keep losing. On the day the Metro Man Museum opens, Megamind escapes from prison, kidnaps the reporter Roxanne Ritchie to lure his enemy to an abandoned observatory, and defeats him there with a sun-powered ray. Metro City falls to Megamind, but with no one left to fight he sinks into boredom and sets out to build a new hero.

- Ben Stiller and later Robert Downey Jr. were each considered to voice Megamind before Will Ferrell was cast, with Downey passing due to scheduling conflicts; Stiller ended up voicing the minor role of curator Bernard instead.
- Creative consultant Guillermo del Toro joined the production only three weeks before it wrapped, contributed the idea for the film's opening free-fall sequence, and convinced the filmmakers to cut seven minutes of already-finished animation.
- Megamind became the highest-grossing film of both Will Ferrell's and Tina Fey's careers, a record Ferrell held until 2014's The Lego Movie.
