Plot summary
Alex Rose and Nancy Kendricks are a young couple in New York, tired of a small apartment and hunting for a place of their own. In Brooklyn they find a brownstone duplex with fireplaces, room to spare and one catch: the rent-controlled top floor belongs to Mrs. Connelly, an elderly Irish tenant. Believing she is old and unwell, they buy the house anyway. Mrs. Connelly is neither quiet nor frail. She runs her television at full volume at all hours, rehearses dancing and a brass band, and complains about the plumbing. Alex, a novelist, is racing a deadline, and Mrs. Connelly calls Nancy at work, so neither of them gets any peace.
