Plot summary
Brian Finn is a Catholic priest and Jake Schram a rabbi; the two have been close since they were boys. They work on New York's Upper West Side, where Brian splits parish duties with Father Havel and Jake serves as the youngest rabbi at his synagogue. Both want services that feel more current, and they plan a shared community center. Jake's attention to his work leaves him little room for romance, a worry to his mother, Ruth. They remember Anna Reilly, a childhood friend who moved to California. After sixteen years apart, Anna comes back to the city for work, and the three take up the friendship again. Jake and Anna become involved, though she is not Jewish, which others in their lives frown upon. Brian, held to his vow of celibacy, is drawn to her as well.
