Plot summary
Mel and Nancy Coplin have a new son, their first child, and Mel will not settle on a name for the boy until he knows who his biological parents are. Tina Kalb, who works part time for an adoption agency and is finishing a dissertation in psychology, locates the name of Mel's biological mother in the agency database and decides to accompany Mel, Nancy and the baby. She films the reunion for her research and covers the costs. The trip begins in San Diego and becomes a tour of the United States. Mel's adoptive parents, Ed and Pearl, remain in New York.
