Plot summary
Gregory Stark, a timber baron in Portland, has been paying a blackmailer who also took a key to his safety deposit box. He hires Daryl Zero, a detective known for cracking impossible puzzles, but he tells Zero's associate Steve Arlo nothing about what the blackmailer holds over him or what is in the box, and says neither matters. Zero works from home with the two principles he calls his obs, objectivity and observation, and refuses to meet clients face to face; every transaction goes through Arlo. This case puts Zero in the field under an invented identity, and for the first time he becomes emotionally involved in a job.
