Plot summary
School is out, and Gerry Garner's parents tell him they have signed him up for Camp Hope, a summer camp where boys go to lose weight. He arrives unwillingly and meets Pat Finley, the counselor who has worked there for years, and the other campers, who have smuggled in junk food for the whole summer. On the first night, the boys learn that the camp's owners, Harvey and Alice Bushkin, have declared bankruptcy, and that a fitness entrepreneur, Tony Perkis Jr., has bought Camp Hope. Tony intends to film their weight loss and turn it into an infomercial. He removes the go-karts and the camp's other activities and puts the boys through hard exercise under a new counselor, Lars.
