Stuart Whitman
Biography
Stuart Whitman was an American actor with a long career in film and television. Born in San Francisco, he was raised in New York until age 12, when his family moved to Los Angeles. After leaving the Army in 1948, he studied acting and appeared in plays. He worked mostly in bit parts for years before his first lead role, in Johnny Trouble (1957). Signed by 20th Century Fox during its late 1950s talent drive, he moved into leading parts in The Comancheros (1961), Murder, Inc. (1960), The Story of Ruth (1960), and These Thousand Hills (1959). His performance in The Mark (1961) brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Later credits included The Longest Day, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965), and Night of the Lepus (1972). On television, he starred in Cimarron Strip and played Jonathan Kent on Superboy from 1988 to 1992. He acted in projects until 2000 and died in 2020.

Own stunts
Stuart Whitman was a lightweight boxer in the U.S. Army, winning 31 of his 32 bouts during his service in the Corps of Engineers.
First role
Whitman got his first leading role on September 21 in John H. Auer's Johnny Trouble, produced by John Carroll, who had him signed to make one film a year for seven years.
Big break
In the late 1950s, Buddy Adler signed Whitman to 20th Century Fox as one of several new names in a star-building program costing $3 to $4 million. Whitman's contract ran for seven years.
A role that slipped away
Over the years, Whitman declined several chances to headline TV shows, among them Mannix and Judd for the Defense. His reason, he said, was that he sought more diversity in acting.
First role
Credited as Kip Whitman, Stuart Whitman first appeared on screen in a bit part in Rudolph Mate's When Worlds Collide, a film that came out in November 1951.
