Plot summary
In pre-Civil War New Orleans, the gambler Paul Regret shoots a judge's son in a duel and, facing a hanging, leaves Louisiana for the Republic of Texas, where he remains wanted. On the road he spends time with a mysterious woman, Pilar Graile. Texas Ranger Captain Jake Cutter takes him prisoner and turns down his bribe. When Comanche burn Cutter's old homestead, Regret knocks him out and slips away, and Cutter returns to his post embarrassed. Cutter's own assignment is a band of outlaw Comancheros, renegade traders he suspects of selling guns and whiskey to the Comanche for profit and of keeping the frontier at war.

- Terminal illness prevented Curtiz, director of Casablanca and The Adventures of Robin Hood, from finishing the film, so Wayne took over as director uncredited; Curtiz died shortly after it was completed.
- Gary Cooper and James Garner were originally set to be the film's leads, but Cooper's ill health and Garner's blackballing over a dispute with Jack L. Warner ruled them out; novelist Paul Wellman had envisioned Cary Grant as Paul Regret.
- John Wayne and Charlton Heston were announced as the film's stars, but Heston dropped out and was replaced by Tom Tryon.
- Tom Mankiewicz, an assistant on the film, said John Wayne told him to remove his John F. Kennedy button.
