Plot summary
Solar flares have burned the Earth for three decades, turning exposed people into psychotic killers and leaving the government and military holding only New York City and Washington. The rest of humanity lives in militarized compounds or roams as slavers and scavengers, hoarding water, gasoline and women. John Travis commands a security patrol for a compound run by Prescott. Reports of an auction of female captives send his squad to break it up, and he has orders to kill the bandit leader Wraith if the chance comes. The raid collapses, and when Travis calls for backup he learns that flare activity has closed his own compound to him. Left outside with three women he has freed, he needs medical help for the sickest of them.
