Madge Blake

Biography

Madge Blake was an American character actress who started acting late, enrolling at the Pasadena Playhouse at 50 and leaning on her cousin, actor Milburn Stone, for early roles. She became a familiar face in 1950s and 1960s television, playing Larry Mondello's mother, Margaret, on Leave It to Beaver, Flora MacMichael on The Real McCoys, and Aunt Harriet Cooper in 96 episodes of Batman. On film she was gossip columnist Dora Bailey in Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Gene Kelly had a special fondness for her, casting her in each of his movies after An American in Paris (1951). She also modeled a fairy for Disney's Sleeping Beauty and guest-starred widely, including on I Love Lucy, The Jack Benny Program and The Joey Bishop Show. Blake, born in Kinsley, died in 1969.
