Plot summary
Late one evening, the appraiser Frank Lucas visits the home of a client who has died, to finish inventorying the estate. In the basement he finds a sarcophagus holding a mummy that wears a solid gold amulet shaped like a cat's head, its eyes set with emeralds. Joe Sung slips out of the shadows and takes the amulet, and Lucas is attacked by a black feline with a jackal's howl. Sung later carries the amulet to The Sorcerer's Shop, which deals in occult goods, and its proprietor, Hester Black, turns him away. Lt. Marco, investigating, takes advice from Roger Edmonds, a professor of archeology. A salesgirl, Rena Carter, is among those drawn into the case.
