Plot summary
Three men break out of a prison garrison in South Africa in 1837, among them Steve Bates, a British soldier, his African friend, and a brutal criminal, Harry Carter. They fall in with a band of Boers on the Great Trek, moving north into the interior under their leader, Willem Prinsloo. Bates is drawn to Prinsloo's granddaughter Francina, who has already been promised to another man. Barent Beyer, who loves Francina, is jealous of the newcomer's place among the trekkers. Zulu warriors attack the party, and the fugitives help hold them off as the wagons push deeper into the interior.
