Plot summary
Stephen Rojack came home from the war a decorated hero and now works as a television commentator, attacking organized crime and the police who fail to stop it. He and his wife Deborah are separated. She lives in the luxury penthouse her father, Barney Kelly, bought for the couple, and she has had affairs of her own. Stephen comes to the penthouse to ask for a divorce, an argument follows, and Deborah falls from the terrace thirty stories to the street. At the police station, where he says she killed herself, he meets Eddie Ganucci, the crime boss he denounces on the air, Ganucci's nephew Nicky, and the nightclub singer Cherry McMahon, a woman he once loved. He and Cherry begin again, and the Ganuccis do not like it.
