Plot summary
Jim Lassiter is a former Confederate officer who has been avenging himself on Apaches since they massacred his family. He takes a stolen new-model Army repeating rifle from Apaches he has killed, and the Army arrests him for holding it. What worries the Army is the thought of Apaches armed with that firepower, so Lassiter is offered his freedom if he leads a small scouting unit into Mexico, learns where the other stolen rifles went and destroys them. Captain Haven, Sergeant Franklyn, a Buffalo Soldier, and Rodriguez, a knife-wielding Mexican prisoner Lassiter has befriended, make up the party, with Sally, an Apache woman warrior, joining them. Fifty barrels of gunpowder go along for use as required.
