Biography

Janet Leigh was an American actress who became one of the earliest scream queens and also starred in dramatic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer productions. Raised in Stockton, California, she was discovered at 18 by Norma Shearer, leading to an MGM contract despite no acting experience. Her MGM films included Act of Violence (1948), Little Women (1949), Scaramouche (1952), and The Naked Spur (1953). After leaving MGM in 1954, she signed with Universal and Columbia and starred in Orson Welles's Touch of Evil (1958). She played Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award nomination. Later credits included The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), and Harper (1966). She made her Broadway debut in Murder Among Friends (1975), appeared in The Fog (1980), then in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), and wrote four books. She died in 2004.

Leigh's first film part was in The Romance of Rosy Ridge, a big-budget Civil War movie from 1947, playing the love interest of Van Johnson's character. She landed it by performing Phyllis Thaxter's long speech from Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo for the studio talent department head.
