Plot summary
Louise Durant tells her father, Nicholas Durant, that she is leaving home for Zürich with Paul Bronte, an aspiring violinist. Her father objects: he wants her at his luncheon for important guests, and doubts she will stay with piano lessons at the conservatory. In Zürich, Bronte practices. James Guest, an American piano student, rents the attic room in her building and is drawn to her, though she hardly notices him. When Bronte is booked to play with the Zürich Symphony in three weeks, he tells Louise he can give her no time until the concert.
