Plot summary
In 1935 Florida, Ruby Claire, pregnant and working as a gun moll, sees her husband, mobster Nicky Rocco, betrayed and killed in the backwoods. With his dying breath he swears revenge, and her labor starts. By 1951 she runs a drive-in theater in the backwoods and staffs it with ex-mobsters. Her teenage daughter, Leslie, has been mute since birth. Ruby shares her home with Vince, her lover and henchman, and Jake Miller, a blind ex-mobster in a wheelchair. Strange events soon strike the theater staff.

- For years the only U.S. video release of Ruby was a re-edited television version, apparently re-shot by director Stephanie Rothman, which cut the film's R-rated violence and added new scenes with dialogue.
SPOILER
The 2001 DVD of Ruby contains the original theatrical version rather than a director's cut: it carries Krantz's abrupt horror ending instead of the romantic ending director Curtis Harrington intended.
