Timothy Carey
Biography
Timothy Carey was an American character actor who specialized in manic, violent men driven to extremes. Born in New York City, he enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II at 15, then made his screen debut in a minor role in Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole (1951). Stanley Kubrick cast him as a gunman in The Killing (1956) and as one of three condemned soldiers in Paths of Glory (1957), the collaborations for which he was best known. He worked twice for John Cassavetes, in Minnie and Moskowitz (1971) and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976), and appeared in One-Eyed Jacks (1961), Head (1968), The Outfit (1973) and D.C. Cab (1983). He wrote, produced, directed and starred in The World's Greatest Sinner (1962), with music by Frank Zappa, and took occasional television roles, including in the pilot for Columbo. He died in 1994.

A role that slipped away
Carey turned down the role of Luca Brasi in The Godfather because he wanted to film a television pilot called "Tweet's Ladies of Pasadena," which was never sold or broadcast.
Behind the camera
Carey starred in, directed, produced and wrote The World's Greatest Sinner, a 1962 feature. Its soundtrack was scored by a young Frank Zappa, and the film gained cult status through repeated midnight movie screenings in Los Angeles.
A role that slipped away
During the filming of Paths of Glory, Carey's disruptive behavior caused a scene with a duck dinner to take 57 takes, and after he faked his own kidnapping, Kubrick and producer James B. Harris fired him.
A first
Carey's face, taken from The Killing, sits behind George Harrison on the Beatles album cover for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It is absent from the released cover but shows up in outtake photos from the session.
