Eduard Franz
Biography
Eduard Franz was an American actor who worked in theater, film and television. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, where performing with the Wisconsin Players Theater in 1922 and 1923 turned his ambition toward acting. He went on to the Coffee-Miller Players in Chicago and the Provincetown Players in New York, appearing in The Emperor Jones and Desire Under the Elms, and by 1936 he was a leading Broadway actor, in plays including First Stop to Heaven, Home of the Brave and Conversation at Midnight. His film debut came in 1947, followed by Hollow Triumph (1948) and Wake of the Red Witch (1948). His roles included Dr. Stern in The Thing from Another World (1951), the cantor in two remakes of The Jazz Singer, and the opera impresario in The Great Caruso. His last screen appearance was in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).

About the name
Eduard Franz dropped his surname when he began acting with the Provincetown Players in New York's Greenwich Village, the company that had first staged works by Eugene O'Neill, Susan Glaspell and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
First role
Franz's first film work was a small part in Killer at Large in 1947. The following year he took a memorable role in The Scar, which was also titled Hollow Triumph.
Beyond film
Franz stayed devoted to the stage even while working in television. In 1961 he took part in the Los Angeles world premiere of Edna St. Vincent Millay's poetic drama Conversation at Midnight, alongside James Coburn and Jack Albertson.
