Plot summary
A soldier named Johnny Barrows steps on a landmine during an army training exercise and jumps clear before it explodes. He punches Captain O'Malley and is dishonorably discharged. Back in Los Angeles, muggers rob him and police arrest him for public intoxication; a captain at the station remembers him as a football player and a decorated Vietnam War hero, and lets him go. Destitute, Johnny walks into the back of an Italian restaurant, where Mario Racconi and Nancy, the manager, offer him a meal. Mario, of the Racconi crime family, wants him as an enforcer. Johnny declines the job. He takes work at Richard's gas station, doing menial chores, while Don Da Vince and his sons Carlo and Tony open a flower shop that hides the family's operations.
