Plot summary
On a hunting trip in the Scottish highlands, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas lose their way and come upon Brigadoon, a village on no map, whose people behave as though two hundred years had not passed. It is the wedding day of Jean Campbell, and the travelers are invited to stay for the party, where Tommy meets Jean's sister, Fiona Campbell. Mr. Lundie, the schoolmaster, tells the two Americans how a preacher once asked for a miracle to keep Brigadoon safe from the witches of Scotland, and the village was granted one day every hundred years. Should any villager leave, the place would vanish forever, while an outsider who loves someone there deeply enough may remain. Tommy and Fiona fall for each other, though Tommy is engaged to Jane Ashton.

- James Mitchell originated the role of Harry Beaton in the 1947 Broadway Brigadoon, and was under contract to MGM, having just finished Minnelli's The Band Wagon with Cyd Charisse, yet the studio gave the film part to New York City Ballet dancer Hugh Laing instead.
- Minnelli and Gene Kelly wanted to shoot Brigadoon in Scotland, but the unpredictable climate and the higher location costs, which did not sit with thrifty MGM president Dore Schary, forced a change of plan; Kelly and producer Arthur Freed flew to Scotland to check the weather and agreed with the studio.
- Judy Garland was attached to Brigadoon at one point during production; Alec Guinness was also set for a role, and David Wayne, Moira Shearer and Donald O'Connor were all under consideration for other parts.
- Minnelli recalled that Donald O'Connor competed with Steve Allen and Bill Hayes for the role of Jeff, and Cyd Charisse replaced Grayson in March 1953.
