Plot summary
After a crash in a desolate, mountainous stretch of desert in what is now Namibia, a group of survivors is stranded far from any help. Among them is Brian O'Brien, a big game hunter and the group's best survivalist. He returns to the burning wreck at the risk of his life and carries out supplies the others need, among them a hunting rifle. A troop of chacma baboons lives in the area. The animals at first keep their distance and holler at the intruders, then grow bolder as they grasp that the people can hurt them only while they have weapons.

- Stanley Baker persuaded his childhood friend Richard Burton to star in Sands of the Kalahari with Burton's wife Elizabeth Taylor, but Taylor was reluctant to film in Africa and demanded more money than Joseph E. Levine would pay, so Burton pulled out.
- After Burton dropped out, George Peppard and Susannah York were cast, but Peppard left the project shortly after filming began, probably to make The Blue Max, and Stuart Whitman was flown in as his replacement.
- Sands of the Kalahari was the last film Stanley Baker and Cy Endfield made together; after it performed poorly at the box office, the pair never made another film together again.
