Plot summary
Walter is left at his great-uncles' ramshackle Texas farm while his mother, Mae, goes off on another husband-hunting trip. Hub and Garth are reclusive bachelors who vanished for years in their youth and are said to have come home with a fortune; salesmen who drive up to the house are met with gunfire. Walter takes an attic room, and the brothers put up with him at first only because his presence irritates other relatives who are after their money. He talks them into spending some of it, on a clay pigeon launcher and then on seeds that turn out to be all corn. A lion ordered as a hunting target arrives instead as a tame retired circus lioness, and she becomes Walter's pet.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Tim McCanlies, an admirer of cartoonist Berkeley Breathed, wrote asking to use his work in the film, and Breathed sent drawings of a strip called Walter and Jasmine, presented as the work of the grown-up Walter and shown over the final credits.
- Film critic and former animator Korey Coleman was set to do the film's artwork, but was called at the last minute and told that Breathed had only just accepted the offer after being silent; Coleman admitted the mix-up was embarrassing because family and friends had already spread word of his success.
