Plot summary
Frank is a retired seaman from Ireland and Walter a retired barber from Cuba, both living alone in Florida. Frank complains to his landlady, Helen Cooney, about a broken air conditioner, spends hours in a bookstore with a Hemingway novel, and boasts of wrestling Ernest Hemingway in 1938. Walter keeps to a routine: a bacon sandwich at the Sweetwater Snack Shop & Cafe, where he is fond of the young waitress Elaine, then a little league ballgame. When a promised trip to Fort Lauderdale for his 75th birthday falls through, Frank brings reading and a drink to the park, where Walter sits over a crossword. After several failed attempts, Frank gets him talking, and the two begin to spend their days together, though Frank's crude talk in public offends Walter.
