Brad McVie and Kate Kinkaid live in San Francisco and have been together three years. Neither is interested in marriage or children, and each Christmas they travel abroad, telling their families they are away doing charity work. This year they plan a relaxing vacation in Fiji. Left with no excuse, the couple faces a day of visits to all four of their divorced parents: Brad's father Howard, Kate's mother Marilyn, Brad's mother Paula and Kate's father Creighton.

- The film began production in December 2007 during the Writers Guild of America strike, which meant no changes could be made to the script, and during production New Line Cinema became a "unit of Warner Bros.", which put the film's completion at risk.
- Seth Gordon was brought in as director at the insistence of Vaughn, who had seen Gordon's documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, a film that, Gordon points out, has the same "traditional three-act structure" as Four Christmases.
- On its opening day, a Wednesday, it ranked second with $6.1 million behind the previous week's blockbuster Twilight, then took the top spot each day from Thursday to Sunday, earning $46.1 million over the extended Thanksgiving weekend.
- Before Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon were cast, Spyglass Entertainment had set Adam Shankman to direct for Columbia Pictures, and Howard Gould was brought in to provide rewrites.
- Peter Billingsley, one of the film's executive producers, also turns up on screen in a credited role, playing the airline ticket agent.
