Plot summary
In the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the Puritan settlers and the neighboring Algonquian live under an uneasy truce. Hester Prynne comes from England and waits for her husband, Roger Prynne, who is thought lost. She takes a house near the forest and befriends Quakers and other outsiders, which attracts some colonists and offends others. She meets Arthur Dimmesdale, a young minister, and the two are drawn to each other. When word suggests Roger Prynne is likely dead, Hester and Dimmesdale give in to their love, and Hester becomes pregnant. The colony imprisons her for adultery, sentences her to wear a scarlet letter, and demands the name of the child's father; Hester refuses to give it.

- Three scores were made for the film: Ennio Morricone submitted demos drawing on his earlier work with director Roland Joffé on The Mission but none were recorded with an orchestra, and Elmer Bernstein's complete score was rejected. John Barry wrote the final score, reportedly at the request of star Demi Moore, who favored his work on Indecent Proposal.
- The waterfront area of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, was substantially altered to resemble a 17th-century Puritan New England town for the film, and several buildings on Dock Street still retain the gray-tone paint finishes applied during production.
