Plot summary
Earl Macklin walks out of an Illinois prison after a 27-month term on a weapons charge, and Bett Harrow is there to collect him. She checks him into a motel and breaks the news that gunmen from the Outfit shot his brother Eddie. A killer comes through the door, and Earl turns the ambush around, holds him, presses him for what he knows, then releases him as a message to Chicago. Bett admits the Outfit had worked on her and threatened her face unless she brought Earl there. Earl's answer is to hit a poker game where Jake Menner is sitting. Menner says the bank Eddie and Earl robbed together belonged to the Outfit, which makes the contract against the brothers simple payback. Earl puts the Outfit's debt to him at $250,000.

- Charlton Heston was sent the script for The Outfit and turned it down after a skim. In February 1973 he wrote in his journal that he had read it again, that maybe he had made a mistake and that it was a good script that should make a good film; he does not appear in the finished movie.
- James T. Aubrey, head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, wanted the ending of The Outfit changed to make it more upbeat, but Flynn remained very fond of the movie.
- The 1973 crime film The Outfit, based on a Richard Stark novel, is the subject of a chapter in Quentin Tarantino's 2022 book Cinema Speculation.
