Plot summary
Years of rumor have built around Felix Bush, a hermit in the woods of rural Tennessee in the 1930s, a man the county says may have killed and may keep company with the devil. The town is startled when he walks into Reverend Gus Horton's church with a roll of cash and asks for a funeral party of his own. Horton refuses. Frank Quinn, whose funeral parlor is in financial trouble, wants the money and agrees to advertise and arrange the event. Buddy Robinson, who heard the exchange, brings it to his boss Quinn, and the two call on Felix with an offer from the funeral home. Anyone with a story about Felix is invited to come and tell it, and Felix insists on a raffle with his land as the prize.
