Plot summary
In the early 1900s, Joe Kidd, a former bounty hunter, sits in the Sinola jail on charges of poaching and disturbing the peace. Luis Chama leads a revolt of the poor, whose ancestral lands the local landowners are taking, and his band raids the courthouse. Frank Harlan, a landowner whose holdings lie in the disputed area, gathers a posse to capture Chama and asks Kidd to ride with it. Kidd turns him down. Harlan keeps pressing him, and Kidd agrees once he learns his own ranch was hit and a worker there was attacked. The posse is made up of ruthless men, several of them carrying new rifles with far greater range than earlier models.

During production, the script for the finale was altered after producer Robert Daley jokingly said a train should crash through the barroom in the climax; the cast and crew took him seriously and thought it a great idea.- Elmore Leonard's script for Joe Kidd, originally called The Sinola Courthouse Raid, was inspired by Reies Tijerina, who in June 1967 stormed a courthouse in Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico, took hostages and demanded the return of Hispanic ancestral lands.
- Clint Eastwood was in poor health during the film, with symptoms suggesting a bronchial infection and several panic attacks, which the media falsely reported as an allergy to horses.
