Plot summary
Maycomb, Alabama, in the Great Depression: Scout Finch, six, and her older brother Jem live with their widowed father Atticus, a lawyer who often takes the cases of poor farmers and is paid in crops or firewood. Each summer the children befriend Dill, a boy who visits, and the three are intrigued by Arthur "Boo" Radley, their reclusive neighbor. Atticus is appointed to defend Tom Robinson, charged with the rape of Mayella Ewell, and the accusation inflames the segregated town. Their classmates taunt Jem and Scout over their father's case. The night before the trial, Atticus sits outside the jail where Tom is held.

- James Stewart turned down the role of Atticus Finch because he felt the story was too controversial, and Universal offered it to Rock Hudson during early development, but producer Alan J. Pakula wanted a bigger star.
- The producers wanted to build the set in Harper Lee's hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, but the town had changed too much since the 1920s, so they made it on a Hollywood backlot instead.
- The film was Robert Duvall's cinema debut, as the recluse Boo Radley; he was cast on the recommendation of screenwriter Horton Foote, who had seen him in a 1957 New York production of Foote's play The Midnight Caller.
- Gregory Peck answered the offer for the role immediately, "He called back immediately. No maybes", and said he was drawn to it because the book reminded him of growing up in La Jolla, California.
- The Old Monroe County Courthouse in Monroeville served as the model for the film's courthouse set, because the real one could not be used due to its poor acoustics, and the Hollywood replica fooled many Alabamians into thinking the film was shot in Monroeville.
