Biography

Marlon Brando was an American actor who helped bring method acting to mainstream audiences after training with Stella Adler and the Stanislavski system in the 1940s. Born in Omaha in 1924, he started on Broadway with I Remember Mama (1944) and then returned as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), reprising the role in the 1951 film. His film debut was The Men (1950). He won Academy Awards for On the Waterfront (1954) and The Godfather (1972), and was nominated for Viva Zapata! (1952), Julius Caesar (1953), Sayonara (1957), and A Dry White Season (1989). He was known for rebellious roles like The Wild One (1953) and also starred in Guys and Dolls (1955), Superman (1978), and Apocalypse Now (1979). He won an Emmy for Roots: The Next Generations (1979), directed One-Eyed Jacks (1961), and his final films were The Score (2001) and The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). He died in 2004.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Marlon Brando was offered a principal role in the Broadway premiere of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, but he declined it. He had fallen asleep over the long script and called the play "ineptly written and poorly constructed."

  2. Behind the camera

    Brando directed his first film, the western One-Eyed Jacks, in 1961. Stanley Kubrick had started as director, but after his early dismissal from the production, Paramount gave Brando the job.
