Plot summary
Earl Pilcher Jr. owns an equipment rental business in a small Arkansas town, where he lives with his wife Ruby, their children and his parents. His mother Carrie dies, and a letter she left says he was not her own child. His birth mother, Willa Mae, was a Black woman who worked as a maid for the family, and Earl's father confirms the letter but will not discuss it. Carrie also asked Earl to go to Chicago and meet his half brother, Ray Murdock. Earl drives north to the city, where Ray, a police officer, agrees to meet him at a diner.
