Plot summary
In 1944 at the Colfax Army Air Field hospital in the Arizona desert, psychiatrist Capt. Josiah J. Newman is in charge of Ward 7, the neuropsychiatric unit. Beds, doctors, orderlies and nurses are all in short supply, and the military is only beginning to accept psychiatric disorders as legitimate. Newman has about six weeks to treat a man or send him on to another facility. His patients include Colonel Norval Algate Bliss, whose erratic behavior over a small social faux pas leads Newman to press for an evaluation, and Capt. Paul Winston, who hid for 13 months in a cellar behind enemy lines and is nearly catatonic. Newman recruits Cpl. Jackson Leibowitz, a wheeler-dealer orderly from New Jersey, and asks Lt. Francie Corum to transfer to the ward.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Captain Newman, M.D. (1963)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The 1961 novel by Leo Rosten was loosely based on the World War II service of his friend Ralph Greenson, an Army Medical Corps captain stationed at Yuma Army Airfield who was among the first psychiatrists to tie post-traumatic stress disorder to wartime experience, years before that term existed.
- Major filming was done at the U.S. Army's Fort Huachuca complex in Arizona, with the co-located Libby Army Airfield standing in for the fictional Colfax Army Air Field; Captain Newman's office was the real Hospital Commanding Officer's office, left as it was but for an added aquarium and desk name plate.
- Greenson, a practicing Freudian and a director of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute, was perhaps best known for his patients, who included Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Vivien Leigh.
