Plot summary
In the mid-1960s, in a small Texas town in Tarl County, banker Val Rogers holds considerable influence. Native son Bubber Reeves and another prisoner escape from prison, and the news unsettles the community. Sheriff Calder, who has always believed in Bubber's innocence, thinks Bubber will head back home. Waiting there is Anna, Bubber's wife, who is involved with Jake, the banker's son and Bubber's best friend. Bubber becomes separated from the other escapee and must make his way alone. The townspeople, divided over whether he is guilty, pass the time drinking and bickering while they wait for him to show up.

- Faye Dunaway auditioned for the role of Anna Reeves, but Jane Fonda was cast instead. After that, director Arthur Penn tested Dunaway and cast her in Bonnie and Clyde.
