Plot summary
Buddy Hillyer returns to the house where he grew up and remembers Georgia in the Depression, when Rose came to stay. The Hillyers took her in as a domestic servant, away from Birmingham, where she had been pushed toward prostitution. Rose admired Mrs. Hillyer, who was finishing a master's thesis and had been orphaned young, as Rose had been, and she developed a crush on the warm Mr. Hillyer. The children and Mr. Hillyer noticed, while Mrs. Hillyer, who was hard of hearing, missed much of what passed between them. Mr. Hillyer feared that Rose's ways with men would bring the family trouble; Mrs. Hillyer saw her promiscuity as a way of seeking love and attention.
