Plot summary
Jack Kelly is a seventeen-year-old newsie in 1899 New York City, hawking the New York World alongside other struggling newspaper sellers. Two newcomers, David Jacobs and his young brother Les, take up selling with them. Unlike most of the others, the brothers sell papers to support their family after their father Mayer is injured and loses his factory job. Jack takes the two under his wing and is invited to their home for dinner, where he meets their sister Sarah. He longs to travel to New Mexico. When publisher Joseph Pulitzer raises the price the boys must pay for their papers, Jack and David rally the Manhattan newsies to strike. As word goes out to the other boroughs, Jack and Les confront Pulitzer and are thrown out of his office. Reporter Bryan Denton takes an interest in their story.

- The real 1899 strike was led by a one-eyed young man named Louis Balletti, nicknamed “Kid Blink”, who appears in the film only as a minor supporting character played by Trey Parker. The strike leader's role went instead to the fictional Jack “Cowboy” Kelly, played by Christian Bale and inspired by Kid Blink and another real newsie, Morris Cohen.
- Alan Menken's longtime collaborator Howard Ashman was too sick from AIDS to work with Menken on this film, and died on March 14, 1991. Menken brought in lyricist Jack Feldman to help.
- The street scenes were filmed at Universal Studios on the existing backlot New York Street area, and this was the first feature to be filmed on the rebuilt New York Street set after the fire of 1990.
- During production several cast members wrote, directed and starred in a satirical horror short film called Blood Drips Heavily on Newsie Square, in which a disgraced actor rejected by director Kenny Ortega decides to murder everyone involved in the Newsies production, including Ivan Dudynsky, Trey Parker, Max Casella and Michael A. Goorjian.
