Plot summary
Helen, a translator, has recently come home to England after working abroad, and she and Anne, a writer, had lost touch. She invites Anne for a weekend at her family's estate, a large manor by a lake in a forest, overgrown and mostly untouched for a long time. She and her boyfriend John had separated. During a storm the two women have dinner, light a fire in the hearth, and talk over tea before bed. Helen asks Anne what she believes comes after death.

- Jean Seberg was cast as the lead, Helen Ramsey, but had to drop out at the last minute because she was not a member of the Actors' Equity Association; Angela Pleasence took over the part.
- Angela Pleasence described the shoot as long days that began at four in the morning and ended after eleven at night, with director José Ramón Larraz controlling on set; during filming she was struck by an overhead light and was hospitalized.
- The film's original prints went missing for decades: it was last shown on British television in 1989 and survived mainly through bootleg copies, until the British Film Institute helped recover the prints for a 2016 DVD release.
- Symptoms premiered at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival in May 1974, becoming the first official British entry at the festival.
