Plot summary
Henri Gaudier is a young French sculptor. Sophie Brzeska, a writer twenty years older than he is, becomes his lover and his creative partner in Paris in the 1910s. Her cultural refinement suits his untamed work. The pair move to London, where Gaudier is taken up by a set of avant-garde artists. In that company he encounters Gosh Boyle, a passionate suffragette who becomes another artistic muse for him.

- Ken Russell cast drama-school newcomer Scott Antony in the lead after seeing 300 actors, choosing him because he was the only one he thought could pick up a hammer and hit a stone.
- The film's source, Jim Ede's biography, grew out of his 1927 purchase from the British Treasury Solicitor of Sophie Brzeska's estate after she died intestate, an estate that held Henri Gaudier's works and papers as well as her writings.
