Plot summary
The old people's home that Edward's parents run is where he lives, ten years old in 1987. Surrounded by residents who are old and dying, he wants evidence of an afterlife, so he hides a tape recorder to catch whatever answers come. The residents have taken over his room, the television control and his privacy, and his parents are busy keeping the business afloat; his father is in the middle of a mid-life crisis. Clarence is a retired magician whose memory is starting to fail, and he has been living in a camper van, unwilling to move into the home. He and Edward meet on the road outside, where the van nearly hits the boy.
