John Savident
Biography
John Savident was a British actor whose career ran across stage, film and television. Born in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, he grew up in Ashton-under-Lyne, and he began acting with Ashton Repertory after a spell as a Manchester City police officer. He was the first actor to play Monsieur Firmin in the West End production of Phantom of the Opera, and he took parts in A Clockwork Orange (1971), Gandhi (1982) and The Remains of the Day (1993), along with television work in Yes Minister, Blake's 7, The Avengers and Doctor Who. He became a household name as the butcher Fred Elliott in Coronation Street from 1994 to 2006, a character who proved popular with viewers.
