Plot summary
In 1857, Richard Burton and John Speke set out to locate the source of the Nile, a journey carried out in the name of the British Empire under Queen Victoria. Burton appears at a meeting of the Royal Geographical Society to declare that he means to trace the river to its origin. At a wealthy gathering he meets Isabel Arundell, and he hopes to secure there the funds the journey will need. Lieutenant John Speke joins him, and the two travel into Central Africa. The expedition lasts from 1857 into 1858, and the hardship of the march draws the two men into a friendship.
