Biography

Charlotte Mitchell, an English actress and poet, worked in London's West End during the 1950s, providing lyrics and sketches for revues and occasionally acting in them. Born in Ipswich in 1926, she was especially successful writing lyrics for Madeleine Dring's music in Laurier Lister's productions Airs on a Shoestring (1953), Pay the Piper (1954) and Fresh Airs (1956). On radio she appeared in The Goon Show episodes Ye Bandit of Sherwood Forest (1954) and Tales of Montmartre (1956). She played Diana opposite Ian Carmichael in The Small, Intricate Life of Gerald C. Potter, the Dowager Duchess in an adaptation of Strong Poison, and Kath Miller in the serial Waggoners' Walk. Her television work included Amy Winthrop in The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972 to 1974) and Monica Spencer in And Mother Makes Five. Her poetry collections included Twelve Burnt Saucepans and Looking Round Dangerously, and she read her work on BBC Radio 4.
