Plot summary
Alfred, a prince of Wessex, is preparing to take vows as a priest when Danish raiders overrun England. His brother Æthelred, the king, summons him to battle, and Alfred proves himself a skilled tactician there. Æthelred dies soon after Alfred weds Aelhswith, a princess of Mercia. Alfred at first refuses both the crown and the marriage, torn between intellect and passion, until another Danish attack forces him to accept the kingship.

- Before David Hemmings took the title role in Alfred the Great, Peter O'Toole was mentioned as a possible lead, and Richard Burton was discussed but turned down: the producer thought Burton was too old to play Alfred.
- To turn parts of County Galway into 9th-century Wessex, the production built a 200-foot-long hill figure of a white horse near Cnoc Meadha, standing in for the Uffington White Horse in Berkshire.
- Director Clive Donner disliked James R. Webb's original screenplay, calling it too "old Hollywood", and had the script rewritten by Ken Taylor.
