Plot summary
May comes from Northern England. Her husband Toots depends on her, and the expectations of the society around her have constrained her life. The couple travel to London to visit their grown children, Bobby and Paula, and Toots falls ill there and dies. May refuses to become invisible like the widows around her, so she goes back to London with Bobby, to the dismay of his wife Helen, and pursues her love of drawing. Darren is a warm younger man renovating Bobby and Helen's house and is Paula's boyfriend, though Paula calls him sweet but weak; he is married and has an autistic son, and sleeps in his van. He and May share a liking for art, and May begins an affair with him.
