Biography

Bob Hoskins was an English actor and director who started on the stage in 1968 and broke through on television as Arthur Parker in Pennies from Heaven (1978). Born in Bury St Edmunds and raised in London, he became known for intense portrayals of tough guys. His acclaimed leads included The Long Good Friday (1980), Mona Lisa (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Mermaids (1990), Felicia's Journey (1999), and Last Orders (2001). For Mona Lisa he won the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Cannes awards and was nominated for an Academy Award, and he later won a Genie for Felicia's Journey and an International Emmy for The Street. He also directed The Raggedy Rawney (1988) and Rainbow (1996). Supporting work included Brazil (1985), Hook (1991), Nixon (1995), Enemy at the Gates (2001), Mrs Henderson Presents (2005), and Snow White and the Huntsman (2012). He died in 2014.

A role that slipped away
Hoskins played Los Angeles private investigator Eddie Valiant in the live-action and animated blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). He was not the first pick for the part, since leading American actors such as Eddie Murphy were considered.

Hoskins began his acting career in 1968 at the Victoria Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, playing a servant named Peter in Romeo and Juliet.
