Plot summary
In 1899, aboard the steamer Nellie on the Thames near Gravesend, Charles Marlow tells his shipmates how he came to command a steamboat for an ivory trading company ten years earlier. The passage down the African coast and into the interior brings him to the Company's Outer Station in the Belgian Free State, where machinery lies scattered and chained men are worked to death. There the chief accountant describes Kurtz, who brings the Company more ivory than any other agent. Marlow then walks two hundred miles to the Central Station, where his steamboat lies wrecked, and learns that Kurtz, far upriver and reported ill, is not admired by everyone.
